Intro to Watercolors
Art instructor Alisa Spine is from St. Petersburg, Russia. She graduated from the premier art institute in Russia, the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, with a Masters of Fine Arts. She became a professor of drawing and painting at one of Russia's most prestigious universities, the St. Petersburg State University. She has participated in international art exhibitions, including in Beijing, Paris, and Moscow.
During this lesson we will become acquainted with one of the many techniques of watercolor painting, namely the use of wet paint on wet paper. This “Wet on Wet” technique is relatively easy and broadly accessible, even for beginners for whom it will be their first introduction to watercolor painting. All explanations will be given in a Masterclass workshop format, with students following the example given by the teacher. The theme of our class will be “Underwater World.” Multicolored exotic fish, colorful corals, translucent water, etc., give us a wide scope for our painting. We will be introduced to how to compose and organize our work, to use color accents and subordinate them to the more neutrally-painted surfaces, and to learn the basic and correct order of painting – from the main and large objects to the details; from the light elements to the dark ones, and many other things. And of course, we'll be having fun with beautiful colors and starting on our way to mastering new skills.
About the Drawing Class: The Portrait
During this lesson we will become acquainted with an important part of drawing people – the portrait. We'll be studying the proportions of the human face, including the template for representing the main features. The drawings will be done with standard pencil. We'll be learning the fundamentals of using linear drawing techniques, as well as some shading (tonal drawing). The format of the lesson will be “Masterclass workshop,” where the student observes the teacher's work and then is guided in their own drawings.
Alisa offers ongoing classes such as watercolor painting, introduction to drawing, human portraits, introduction to painting with acrylic paint, introduction to pastels, drawing with (fountain) pens, and more. The lessons consist of the rudiments of drawing and painting, including the various techniques: watercolor, pastels, acrylic, oil paint, mixed techniques, pencil, pen, etc.; and the different genres: portrait, still life, landscape, composition, etc. They consist of work out in nature, working with models or objects, and using one’s imagination. The styles taught range from realistic and classical to decorative to figurative and stylistic. The lessons are taught in a demonstrative Masterclass format. Alisa has extensive experience teaching students of all ages, from 3 to 85. For those who are serious and study with her on an ongoing basis, she can help complete beginners (or whatever level they come to her with) achieve a very high degree of competency as artists.
Testimonial: Alisa "has been giving my daughter lessons since the beginning of this summer. Her instruction is excellent, and I believe that she will be a great teacher to introduce to homeschoolers. My daughter has significantly improved in her art techniques." - CL
