Indian Canyon Creek Hike

6/20/2016

Picture
When
Monday, June 20, 2016, 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
This hike is about 2 hours long but since its out and back you can make it as long or as short as you want it to be. This hike's turn around point is a creek and waterfall so you can stay and play as long as you want.

Where:
Park your car and meet at the intersection of W Hartson Ave and South H Street in Spokane.  Whittier Park is very near this intersection and it has a bathroom.  The park is just North of Sunset Blvd and West of Government Way. Map

We'll begin with a "Scat & Snacks" animal signs activity. In a zoo, there are signs that tell you what animal to look for, such as “Moose.” But in their natural habitat, animals don't stand next to a sign that labels them. However they do leave us clues as to who was there, in the form of scat. Come learn to identify some Indian Canyon inhabitants by their scat. Just like a naturalist, look for real scat and tracks on our hike. We will give each scientist-in-training marshmallows, jelly beans and other foods, which have the same size and shape as some animal scat.

The hike goes through the woods and around the Indian Canyon Golf Course, crosses a road and goes into Indian Canyon Conservation Futures property. Along the way we'll stop briefly to play a game called Hug-A-Tree. There is a waterfall and creek on Indian Canyon Creek with a bit of a cave next to it. The trail down to the bottom of the waterfall is a bit rugged. It is a 3 mile trail  with some ups and downs (the kind you can often get kids to run up and down for fun).

Hydroponic Farm Tours - FULL

5/1/2014

Picture
When
Thursday, May 1, 2014, 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Where
C&S Hydro Huts, a Hydroponic Farm
21919 E Rowan Ave, Otis Orchards,  WA  99027

What is Hydroponics?  Hydroponic plants are grown in water instead of soil.  All of the nutrients they need are circulated directly to the roots.  This enables plants to spend less energy on creating root systems and more energy on developing fruits, flowers, and leaves.
What are the advantages?  We can produce up to 1000 heads of lettuce per week using 25% less space and 90% less water than traditional farming methods.  And we can do this 365 days a year. We’re not depleting soil resources, we use no artificial chemicals as fertilizer or weed control, and there’s nearly zero waste.

Lewis & Clark IMAX Movie plus Fun (and educational) Lewis & Clark Activities

5/31/2013

Picture
When
Friday, May 31, 2013, 9:45 am - 1:00 pm

Where
Riverfront Park, IMAX Theater
Spokane, WA 99201

We begin our historic journey with an IMAX movie about Lewis  & Clark. It was the dawn of a nation -- a time before the American West became known as the frontier, and little was known about what lay within. Two captains, courageous in spirit and unyielding in their dedication to their mission, led 31 people, including one woman and her infant son, to the Pacific Ocean and back. Now, 200 years after the launch of the expedition, this breathtaking drama is captured for audiences in the newest large-format release from National Geographic. Audiences will experience the danger and beauty of the unknown West as it unfolded before the eyes of Lewis and Clark.

Next we travel onward to the picnic tables in Riverfront Park for a sack lunch.

Finally we embark on fabulously fun and exciting educational activities to help us learn even more about the adventures of Lewis & Clark.
  • We'll make our own compasses, like Lewis & Clark would have done.
  • We'll learn to measure distance by dead reckoning, just like William Clark.
  • We'll figure out how to measure speed in knots (as if we were in a boat.)
  • We'll discover how to draw a map like a Mandan American Indian leader.
