1:00 pm - 2:00 pm. Picnic lunch (optional)
2:00 pm - 4:00 pm. Hike (optional)
Dishman Hills Natural Area
625 S. Sargent Road, Spokane
Meet at the Camp Caro Community Park Playground
Come hike through the Dishman Hills Natural Area, which is adjacent to Camp Caro Community Park. This area is 530 acres of dramatically sculpted rocky hills and ponds with areas of grasses mixed pine and fir forest, aspen groves, views, and a profusion of wildflowers every spring. Dishman Hills serves as a habitat for wildlife and as a passive recreational resource with miles of designated trails.
We'll begin with the Scat Snacks Game - an animal signs activity. In a zoo, there are signs that tell you what animal to look for, such as “Moose.” But in their natural habitat, animals don't stand next to a sign that labels them. However they do leave us clues as to who was there, in the form of scat. Come learn to identify some Dishman Hills inhabitants by their scat. Just like a naturalist, look for real scat and tracks on our hike. We will give each aspiring scientist marshmallows, jelly beans and other foods, which have the same size and shape as some animal scat.
What to wear/bring: If you want to bring a picnic lunch, there are picnic tables near the playground. Dress for the weather and terrain. Bring hiking snacks and water for yourself but not the wildlife. Wear insect repellent.
Cost: $3 per family. There is a $10 fee per family to register. $7 will be refunded after the trip as long as you show up.
