Welcome to Exploring Families' first Engineering Olympics! There are 10 projects to choose from. You can compete in as many competition projects as you want. You will make all the projects at home before the competition date. Bring your completed projects to the library ready to compete. Here are the competition projects to choose from:
- Bow & Arrow
- Slingshot Rockets
- Simple Sail Car
- Slingshot Cars
- Cork Shooter
- Triangle Slinger
- Pyramid Catapult
- Siege Engines
- Crash Test Cars
- Hydraulic Judo Bots
1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes will be awarded for each event. The student who earns the most number of points overall will earn 2 one hour passes to Get Air.
All the instructions for how to build each item can be found on www.Instructables.com. Although there may be lots of ways to build these projects and many websites with a variety of ideas, please only use the instructions found on Instructables so that all the kids are following the same basic instructions. There is flexibility within the directions, especially for the Crash Test Cars and Hydraulic JudoBots, so use your creativity! If you are unsure, please contact us. All the competitions will be on short carpet. Keep this in mind if you are competing in some of the car rolling competitions. To be fair to all kids in this competition, please have your kids do the construction of each project on their own as much as possible. Some kids, for obvious safety reasons, will need help with hot glue guns. This is not an adult-child building competition. Let your kids make mistakes and learn!
If you are competing in the Crash Test Car, please bring your own hard boiled eggs.
Start collecting building supplies today! We purchased all items locally except for the plastic wheels, the syringes and vinyl tubing. If you can't find the supplies you need, please contact us. We may be able to help you get what you need.
Age: All ages of kids are welcome. Even a young child can build a simple sail car with a little parental guidance.
Cost: $7 per child. Spectators and cheerleaders are free!
