It's no secret - Spokane has an outstanding Barbershop Chorus! The Pages of Harmony has served the community of Spokane for over 50 years through chorus performances and quartet singing for the enjoyment of the many people who appreciate the special music known as barbershop harmony. The men who comprise the Pages of Harmony Chorus are committed to advancing the Barbershop Harmony style through fellowship, education, performances and community service to the larger area of the Inland Empire. For this activity you get to observe the singers weekly practice session, learn about what barbershop harmony is and its rich history, plus ask the chorus director and singers questions.
What is Barbershop Harmony?
Barbershop harmony is a style of unaccompanied singing with three voices harmonizing to the melody. The lead sings the melody; the tenor harmonizes above the lead; the bass sings the lower harmonizing notes; the baritone provides in-between notes, either above or below the lead to make dominant-type chords ("barbershop sevenths"). This arrangement of voices gives barbershop a distinctive, full sound.

In old-time America, barbershop harmony was actually sung in barbershops, as well as on street corners (dubbed "curbstone harmony"), in social functions and parlors. The style of singing is a melting-pot product of African-American musical devices, European hymn-singing culture, and an American tradition of recreational music. Barbershop is a uniquely American art form, sprung from the ear-harmonizers or "woodshedders" of the turn of the century America.
Many of our Quartets over the years, have provided the Spokane community with barbershop harmony events such as Valentine sing outs, birthdays, and other special occasions. The Chorus, under the capable directorship of Neil Newlun, has performed admirably in theme shows and cabarets throughout the years.
The Pages of Harmony are the Spokane Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society. Competition in chorus and quartet singing at the local division level is encouraged which can then lead to the participation of competition at the District level. Winners of this event would be invited to the international competition held once a year in different cities throughout the U.S.
The Barbershop Harmony Society is open to anyone wishing to explore their inner singing nature at a higher level. This can take the form of participation in the chorus or quartet singing. We have an active membership ranging from those men in their twenties to men in their eighties. For a quality learning experience and the enjoyment of performance at the best you can be, joining the Pages ofHarmony chorus will challenge you for a life time.
