The Green Zone is a place to discover "earth-friendly" ideas and alternatives compatible with the Inland Northwest lifestyle. As the population of Spokane County grows, greater demands will be placed on our environment by the choices and actions of individuals. The volume of waste is increasing, the sources of air and water pollution are becoming more widespread, and the need to conserve water is growing. The Green Zone is a free, public outdoor and indoor learning center demonstrating positive options for business, home and play to create a more sustainable environment. Our goal is to provide a public learning center with information about environmentally sound alternatives to traditional practices so that individuals can make choices for a more sustainable lifestyle.
Ages: Kindergarten to 12th grade. Younger children are not allowed to attend this "class" so please leave them with a sitter.
The Green Zone ...
- demonstrates water conservation and aquifer protection methods through stormwater management systems, xeriscaping (drought tolerant landscaping) and permeable paver installations;
- demonstrates methods of waste reduction: composting, consumer choices and recycled-content building materials;
- offers an environmental resource center containing books and exhibits.
