Bring your students who love history and your teens who love computer hardware and software systems! Your students will be introduced to interesting careers in these "behind the scenes" tours. The Archives departments provide archival and records management services, specifically for the preservation of records from both State and Local agencies that have permanent legal, fiscal or historical value. The paper archive tour is given by a WA State Archivist. The digital archive tour is provided by the department's Network Administrator, a former college instructor in the Computer Science department. You'll learn about the Digital Archive and their full data center. Come see lots of servers (about 180), storage (about 750TB), backup systems – tape library and spinning disk arrays, network and host firewalls, intrusion prevention systems, and the list goes on. You'll see in real-time scanning attacks against their firewalls and exploits against their Intrusion Prevention System. The Network Administrator describes this part of the tour "to be a fun and interesting activity for people to see." You'll better understand the technology they use and why. They will inform you on how they build digital archives, with emphasis on showing the evolution of starting with just a single static web page on a single server to where they are today – starting 10 years ago as the first state digital archives in the nation and now they have a 55TB database full of archival records for the state of Washington. Not sure what all this computer lingo is? Come ask the experts!
The WA State Digital Archives is the nation's first archives dedicated specifically to the preservation of electronic records from both State and Local agencies that have permanent legal, fiscal or historical value. Located in Cheney, WA on the Eastern Washington University campus, the new facility was designed from the ground up to host this technically complex program. The web interface and database storehouse were custom designed specifically for the Digital Archives to hold the unique and very important electronic records found throughout the state, and to provide simple, straight forward access to researchers. The Digital Archives includes a state of the art research room, complete with computer research stations, a high tech presentation classroom and a world-class data center.
